Discussion Questions

Why are the roles of authority and submission such touchy subjects for people? In what ways have they been abused? What ties do these abuses have with humanity’s initial rebellion against God?

Are the roles themselves a result of sin? Explain.

Do you think it’s possible to acknowledge the wrongs done in the past and redeem the God given roles for husbands and wives? Explain. How is this different from the way that the world is responding to marital abuse?

How is the church called to submit to Christ? Is that a burden or a joy? What does it mean for a believing wife to submit to her husband?

How did Christ love the church? How should believing husbands love their wives? Why did Christ love the church? Why should husbands love their wives?

Is a wife’s submission and a husband’s love dependent upon a spouse’s fulfillment of their role? Why or why not? Can a wife submit to a husband who is not practicing Christ-like love and vice versa? Is Christ’s love for and commitment to us dependent on our ability to love him?

How might this prescription for husbands and wives strengthen their marriage? How might it help them prepare each other for eternity?
