Discussion Questions:

As a group, make a list of all the things that people do that might be indicators of self-centeredness.

Why do you think that people are so fascinated with self-promotion and self-vindication? Do you think that most people honestly believe themselves to be superior to others? Explain.

Read Mark 9:33-37. What were the disciples arguing over? What was Jesus’ response? What does a willingness to be last and serve others say about a person’s heart, values, understanding of self, and understanding of God?

Define meekness. 

What does meekness have to do with one’s understanding of God and self?

Does practicing meekness mean turning a bling eye to sin and avoiding confrontation or accountability? Explain.

If meekness is the fruit of a heart that recognizes personal fallibility and weakness in light of God’s sovereignty and perfection, then how might disciples seek to grow in it?
