Discussion Questions:

Read Mark 8:31-9:29 as a group.

Why would Jesus’ announcement of his suffering, death, and resurrection have been a surprise to his disciples? What had they been expecting?

How was Peter’s rebuke of Jesus revealing of his desire for things to be done man’s way rather than God’s way? What is the difference between man’s way and God’s way?

Jesus’ path to victory meant suffering and death. In what way is the path for his disciples similar?

If salvation is the free gift of God through Jesus (Eph. 2:8), then why does he say that those who come after him must deny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow him? How is that different than the works righteousness of the Pharisees?

Why do you think that Jesus revealed his glory to Peter, James and John? Why is important to keep his glory in mind when considering the suffering that he and his followers endure?

Why do you think that the disciples were unable to cast out the demonic spirit within the man’s son? Why is what Jesus says in Mark 9:29 of crucial importance for those who live in opposition to the forces of evil here on earth?
