Discussion Questions:

Read Mark 14:27-42 as a group.

Who was Jesus talking to when he said that “you will all fall away”? From what you know of Scripture, was his prediction correct? How would they fall away?

What does Peter’s statement in verse 31 tell us about the confidence that we can sometimes have in ourselves?

Why do you think that Jesus makes a point of telling his disciples that they will fail? What is the take away for us? What does it tell us about our ability to measure up to God’s standard?

Compare and contrast the behavior of the disciples with that of Jesus. In what ways are his obedience and righteousness highlighted?

How does this passage describe the anguish that Jesus was enduring? How might that be comforting for Christians who endure suffering?

In verse 36 Jesus asks the Father to “remove this cup.” What did he mean by cup? What was it about the cup that was particularly distressing for Jesus? What should that tell us about how we should regard the effects of our sin?

Philippians 2:8 says that Jesus “humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” How does Jesus indicate his intent to obey the Father in Mark 14:36?

In what way does Christ succeed where we have failed?

What should our response be to Christ’s triumphant submission to God the Father?
