Discussion Questions:

Read Mark 15:33-47 as a group.

What does it mean to be in darkness?

What are some examples of darkness that unbelieving people might identify in our world today? What types of solutions do they look to? In what way are these inadequate means of salvation?

Read Isaiah 9:2: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. Isaiah 9:2 What does the Bible mean when it says that people are walking in darkness?

What did the midday darkness indicate as Jesus suffered on the cross?  Why was it necessary?

In what way is the darkness that fell as Jesus endured the full wrath of God essential for those walking in darkness to be brought into the light?

Who comes to acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God in Mark 15:33-47? In what way was he an unlikely convert? Are there people in your life that you would identify as unlikely to trust in Jesus? Why do you think of them in that way? Are you praying for their salvation?

What does the tearing of the temple curtain from top to bottom have to do with Christ’s death? Why is that good news for those who trust in Jesus? See Hebrews 10:19-22. Why is this an important reality for Christians to remember as they continue to battle sin in their lives?
