Have you ever been persecuted for your faith? How did it make you feel? How did you respond?
Read the following passage which Jesus spoke to his disciples and answer the question that follows.
"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” John 15:18-20
What does Jesus tell his disciples that they can expect? Why?
What do you think Jesus means when he says, “you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world?” In what way should that be encouraging to Christians?
Read the following passage which Jesus also spoke to his disciples and answer the question that follows.
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:11-12
According to Jesus, why should Christians “rejoice” when they experience persecution? Do you agree with that? Why or why not?
