Discussion Guide

Read 1 Peter 1:13-17 as a group.

What does it mean to be “sober-minded”?  What are some things that tend to intoxicate your mind and dull you to living in light of “the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:13)?

Do you think it is possible to set your hope fully on the future you have with Christ?  Explain. How do you think this could practically be done in real life?  What would it look like?

Read 1 Peter 1:14 again. This verse tells us not to conform to the passions you had when you lived in ignorance. In what way are the passions we had before we came to know Christ related to ignorance? In what ways do our attempts to fulfill those desires outside of God’s design prove destructive?

In what ways does God want his chosen people to be holy (set apart)? For what reason should Christians strive for holiness? What does it say about a person’s faith if they ignore God’s call to be holy?

How can you be set apart in your everyday life?  What might your life look like if your were holy?

Is complete holiness possible while we live here on earth?  Why or why not?  Does your answer to that question have any affect on how you should live?  Why or why not?

What did Peter mean when he said to, “conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile” in verse 17? Are you living your life in reverence to God? Explain.
