DISCUSSION GUIDES

Community Groups:

Read: Acts 13:42-52

What was the gospel that Paul and Barnabas had been preaching?

What did Paul mean in verse 39 when he said that "everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses"? What are people trusting in in our time that will not "free" them?

Verse 45 says that the Jews were "filled with jealousy." Why were they jealous of the Gentiles being able to have salvation as well? What did that imply about their pedigree and efforts to keep the law?

What about the gospel offends people today?

Did the message Paul and Barnabas were sharing bring the Jews and Gentiles together? Why or why not?

Explain why the gospel might be upsetting or divisive? Should that be surprising to us? What did Jesus tell us about this? Hint: see Matthew 10:34-36.

In what ways do some Christians try to make the good news of Jesus less divisive or palatable? What is wrong with those efforts?

If the gospel of Jesus is offensive, then why would anyone want to share it?

Family Time (For dads, moms and kids):

Read Acts 13:42-52

What was the good news of Jesus that these people wanted to hear Paul and Barnabas share with them again?

Why did some people get upset in verse 45?

What happens if people do not believe the good news about Jesus? Hint: see verse 46.

Are you trusting in Jesus? How do you know?
